I then couldnt print my transactions, and found the print queue was grumbling about cups-browsed not running. next i tried to use Brave to do a bit of online banking, but that was a bit glitchy so i used firefox instead. not sure exactly what fixed it, but i just allowed Ubuntu to install a backlog of updates including a kernel update (which knackered up my grub boot loader and needed rolling back to previous kernel then forcing reinstall of 5.4.0-73-generic). It appears that I am now able to print directly from Brave. Ubuntu Mate 20.04, using the official packages, not the Snap.
